PARENT HANDBOOK

PARENT HANDBOOK

J.A.D.S Children Center Inc.would like to thank you for entering our small family and for trusting us with the educational and physical development of your child.

J.A.D.S. Children Center Inc. is a place where children get the education, caring and attention needed daily. We focus on the five stages of development: language, physical, social, emotional and cognitive to help your child learn the fundamentals needed when they start school.
Our business is more than just a place where parents can entrust their children to caring individuals. It is a place where a child can get “Parental love and Professional care”.  At J.A.D.S Children Center Inc. children, ages 3 months to 4 years of age will get individualized care, and daily education reinforcement. Our goal is to foster early childhood development in helping children grow emotionally, socially and physically at their pace. Since there is a broad range of behaviors exhibited by the children, what works for some children may not work for others. We tailor our program to accommodate the needs of the individual child.

HOURS OF CARE POLICY:
J.A.D.S Children Center Inc. official hours of operation are 8am to 6pm. We open the center at 7:30am for early drop off to accommodate working parents.
All children must be at the center by 9:30am.
After 9:30am your child is considered late and will not be allowed into class.
Only if there is an emergency or your child has a doctor’s appointment will admittance be allowed.
LATE FEE POLICY:
FOR EVERY CHILD THAT IS NOT PICKED UP BY 6:00PM, THERE WILL BE A LATE FEE OF $15 UNTIL 6:10PM. An additional $5 will be added for every 10 (ten) minutes thereafter.
After 6:30pm, if your child has not been picked up staff are obligated to take child to the local precinct.
PAYMENT POLICY:
Tuition fees be it private pay or city funded payments fees are due on Fridays at pick up time.
If your payment is not in on Fridays you will be charged a $5 fee for every day it is late. If you accrue $30 worth of fees (3days) your child will not be allowed to return until the payment is bought current.

EMERGENCY POLICY:
·        It is mandated that the parents keep their addresses, home telephone, cell phone numbers and emergency contact names and numbers CURRENT.

·        You must give the center a completed medical form stamped by doctor upon registering the child. It must be updated every year. Without a current medical your child cannot be at center.

·        If there is any emergency or the center must obtain medical attention for your child (ren) you will be contacted and directed to where your child will be.

·        An authorization for Medical Care form must be signed and dated giving the center permission to obtain required care.

MEDICAL EMERGENCY PROCEDURES:
1.     When a child becomes ill, the child is taken to the nurses’ station or Directors office. The parent will be contacted and is requested to report to the center. The child will rest on a cot in nurse’s station until his/her parent’s arrival.

What “ill” means in daycare
2.     If a child vomits more than once the parent will be called to pick up the child.
3.     In the event of a minor accident, the directors, or their designee, must contact the parent and request that he/she report to the center as soon as possible. If the parent cannot be reached, the person indicated on the emergency card will be contacted and asked to report to the center.
4.     If your child develops a fever he/she will be given one dose of fever reducing medication (only when authorization is formally documented) until child can be picked up. If medication cannot be given child must be picked up immediately.
a.     If your child left the center with a fever, your child cannot return to school until they have been 24 hours without a fever or a notice from doctor clearing child to return.
5.     If your child soils more than two diapers with diarrhea, parent will be called to pick up child. Child cannot return until diarrhea has cleared or letter from doctor is received clearing child.
6.     In the case of illness of a severe nature or major accidents. The directors or their designee will call 911 for an ambulance to transport
the child to the nearest hospital emergency room. The directors will designate a staff member to accompany the child. Attempts will be made to contact the parent at the same time to inform of all the actions, as well as where the child is being taken.
The expectation is that the parent will meet the child at the hospital to sign all official documents and to take the child home.
7.     All pertinent health information kept on site will accompany the child.
8.     All accidents, incidents, and illnesses are formally documented.

EVACUATIONS:
Please be advised all children will participate in bi monthly fire drills. The drills will be realistic in where the children will actually be taken outside as if it was a real fire. You will be contacted in the event of a real fire by the administrators immediately.
In the event that the center has to be evacuated we will have a centralized location to meet where you can pick up your child. Our meeting location is MS363 on 184th street and Morris Ave.

ITEMS YOUR CHILD NEEDS IN classroom:

·        Clothes
Every child must have a change of clothes at the center. The change of     clothes must be placed in a clear Ziploc bag with the child’s name on it. The infants must have two sets of clothes at the center. As the seasons change so    should your child’s change of clothes.

·        Sheets
Every child must bring in two sheets for their cots. One to place under their body and one as a cover during nap/rest time. (Suggestion is to take a flat sheet and cut it in half to make two).  Each sheet should be labeled.
Infants should bring in crib sheets. Sheets are to be taken home every Friday to launder and returned to class on Monday.

·        Diapers (if applicable)
If your child is in diapers or pull ups; you are responsible to bring in their diapers and wipes every Monday for the week. If your child does not have diapers we will provide the diapers for a fee of $2 for every 3 diapers. Payable at the end of that week.

·        Bottles (if applicable)
You are to bring in your child’s bottles which should be labeled with their name. We require bottles that have drop in inserts only. You are also required to provide their formula.

STROLLER POLICY

You’re leaving the stroller at your own risk. J.A.D.S Children Center will not reimburse anyone for a stolen or lost stroller.

Behavior Management:
The center staff shall provide constructive methods for maintaining group control and handling individual behavior problems:

·        Staff will set limits that are suitable for the children, thus facilitating their development and self control.

·        Staff will respond to individual children who display inappropriate behavior by taking the child aside and explaining why the behavior is unacceptable.

·        Staff will attempt to resolve the source of the child’s inappropriate behavior before reintegrating him/her into the group activities.

·        Staff anticipates potential problem situations and plans accordingly by providing individual children with positive alternatives before their behavior deteriorates.

·        Limit setting strategies never include corporal punishments (hitting or manhandling children is never allowed), humiliation, isolation, frightening methods of control, or punishment associated with food, rest or toileting.

·        Staff will not enforce limits erratically or punitively, nor control children through intimidating verbal or body language.

·        According to Article 47.67 code dictates all children shall be comforted when distressed.

·        Children will be redirected to sad seat or naughty seat for a time limit according to their age.

·        Staff will encourage children to verbalize their difficulties and negative feelings, and begin to develop alternatives strategies as a positive alternative to acting out.

ESCORT POLICY:
1.     Parents must identify a primary escort and an emergency escort which should include current address and telephone numbers.
2.     The child’s expected arrival and departure time should be indicated on the emergency cards.
3.     Parents are responsible for notifying the center of any changes in the child’s escort or schedule. No one can pick up a child without identification.
4.     Escorts should be at least (16) sixteen years of age.
5.     If the escorts appear to threaten the health, safety and welfare of a child, the director will inform the parents and recommend the parent to designate a more appropriate escort.
6.     The names, addresses, and telephone numbers of all approved escorts should be recorded and maintained in each classroom as well as the centers office files readily available to staff.
7.     Children will not be accepted into the center before official opening time and the escort must accompany the child to his or her classroom and sign in. This is an official legal log of all children entering the center for services.
8.     The daycare program will only assume responsibility for a child who has been signed in.
9.     All children must be picked up before or by closing time 6pm and must be signed out on the official legal log.
10.                         Children will only be released to those persons named on the emergency card. No written authorization presented by an unknown person wishing to pick up the child nor any unidentifiable telephone call shall be considered as an acceptable reason to release a child. Parents are encouraged to designate additional persons who can serve as emergency escorts and should be included in the plan.
11.                        If you have someone who can no longer pick up the child, you must submit a written notarized letter with the specifications along with any court documents.
12.                        Any child not picked up by closing hours will go through the following process:
·        The director and/or staff will make every effort to contact the parents, escorts and/or emergency person(s) to assume the responsibility for the child.
·        When the parent arrives, he/she will have to pay a late fee.

·        If contact is not made, and the hour is very late, the center is advised to call a report of Child Abuse and Maltreatment into the NYS Central Registry.
·        The Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) will then send out an emergency children service (ECS) worker to investigate.
·        If, as a last resort, a child is taken to a local policy precinct until the parent or ECS worker arrives, a note will be left on the center’s door informing a parent where the child has been taken.

PARENT POLICY
·        It is easier for the child to get accustomed to being in class if the parent comes in with the child, signs the child in, assist the child in removing their coats/jackets and then says goodbye to their child.

·        For the first week we ask that you reduce your time in the class as the week goes on. The first day we ask you stay 10 min, the 5min then 3min etc…By the second week the child should have established some of a routine. When you linger in the class it is both distracting to the other children and makes it difficult for the child to adjust.

·        A parent can always call the center to check in on their child throughout the day.

·        We have open door policy; you can visit at any time during the day providing that it does not disturb the classroom schedule.

·        Parents can call and arrange to meet with their child’s teacher to discuss the child’s progress in class or just attend the quarterly parent teacher nights.

·        Please make sure you check the parent communication board daily in the reception area.

·        You are not allowed to stay in class longer than 5 minutes. It is disruptive for the teacher and for the child.
Visitors Policy:
J.A.D.S Children Center Inc. wants the safest environment for the children.
We ask that each visitor abide by the following rules.
·        Everyone who is not a staff member or parent must sign in and out as well as stating the reason for your visit in the visitor’s log book.
·        No one is allowed to just come in and stay at the center unless you are staff.
·        All utility and service people must sign in and out of daycare.
·        Staff is not allowed to bring anyone into the center unless it has been approved by directors.
·        All therapists must get approval to conduct therapy at the center from directors prior to starting and must sign in and out.

ABSENCE POLICY:

1.     If your child is going to be absent you must call the center and inform the front desk by 9:30am.
2.     If your child is out for three or more consecutive days, your child cannot return to J.A.D.S Children Center Inc.until we have received a medical notice clearing the child to return to school.
3.     If your child has a communicable disease i.e.: chicken pox, pink eye etc. you must contact J.A.D.S within 24hrs and cannot return until doctor clears them to return.
4.     If you are going on vacation, or your child will be out for a significant amount of time not related to illness you must inform center.

BIRTHDAY POLICY AND PROCEDURES:
Your child is allowed to celebrate his or her birthday in the classroom. However, there are certain procedures that must be followed:
1.     You must inform the teacher of the exact date so that we can arrange for it accordingly.
2.     If you are bringing in party bags, there must be one for each child in the class. You must ask the teacher how many bags you should bring prior to the date of the party.
·        Party bags cannot contain small toys because they are a choking hazard.
·        You cannot have hard candies or gum in the party bags. Healthy snacks are preferred. Keep in mind we are a peanut free daycare so nothing with peanuts or peanut content.
3.     No cakes or soda allowed. You can only bring in individual juice boxes or pouches and cupcakes.
